Secretary General at the HL7 Europe Foundation, President European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI)

Catherine Chronaki, a computer engineer by training, is currently the secretary general at the HL7 Europe Foundation and the EFMI Vice President for Working Groups (2018-2020). Catherine has engaged in eHealth projects since the early 90’s when she joined FORTH-ICS to engage in the design, implementation, and evaluation of a system for the retrieval of medical images by content. Since then she has played a key role within national and European eHealth projects, addressing the wider scope of eHealth: (a) health Information Infrastructures employing interoperability standards for integrated Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and eHealth services using medical devices such as ECGs (Coordinator OpenECG: www.openecg.net) and remote monitoring of cardiac implants, (b) risk assessment and consumer adoption of eHealth services, (c) extending EHRs to support disease surveillance and emergency services, (d) eHealth applications for disaster & emergency management (civil protection) based on hybrid satellite-WiFi and mobile networks.

Author of 100+ papers, she has served as Associate Editor IEEE Transactions for IT in Biomedicine, and on the program committee of major eHealth conferences as annual Engineering in Medicine and Biology Conference (theme Associate editor 2006-2010), MedInfo, MIE, IHIC, etc. Catherine has served on the HL7 International Board (as Affiliate Director 2008-2012). She is member of the Board of HL7 Hellas, served on the Council of the European Federation of Medical Informatics, and is a member of the eHealth Stakeholders group of the European Commission. She has served as secretary on the Nucleus of the eCardiology WG of the European Society of Cardiology. She recently concluded the Trillium Bridge projects operational arm of the EU/US MoU Roadmap, the eStandards support action which collects evidence to deliver a standardization roadmap for large scale eHealth deployment in Europe, and the Trillium-II, continuation of Trillium Bridge project aiming to scale up adoption of EHR standards, starting with the international patient summary (IPS). Her current involvement in European projects explores use of the HL7 FHIR® IPS in different contexts, including living environments (Gatekeeper project), support for FAIR data (FAIR4Health), identification of medicinal products (UNICOM), and mHealthHub (policies for mobile health in Europe).
